About us
A slower kind
of studio
SATVA began as a single room above a print workshop and grew into the quietest address in SoHo. We teach yoga the way we like to live: with attention, without hurry.
Our story
Born from burnout, built on breath
In 2018 our founder Elena Voss left a career in fast fashion with a bad back and a shorter temper. A friend lent her a mat. Six months later she was teaching eight neighbours in a rented room above a print workshop on Crosby Street.
The room was small, the floor was creaky and the kettle never stopped. People came back not for the poses but for the feeling of leaving a little lighter than they arrived. That feeling became our brief.
Today SATVA is three rooms, five teachers and one idea: yoga should feel generous. We keep classes small, music low and the tea hot.
Four quiet
principles
Breath
Every movement starts and ends with the inhale and the exhale. If you lose the breath, we slow down.
Strength
Not the loud kind. The kind that lets you hold a pose, a deadline and a difficult conversation.
Stillness
Silence is part of the sequence. Each class ends with at least four minutes of nothing at all.
Community
Fifteen mats, no ranking, no mirrors in your eyeline. You are practicing with people, not performing for them.
From one room
to a studio
One room on Crosby
Eight mats, one teacher and one very loud kettle above a print workshop.
Studio One opens
Oak floors, north-facing windows and our first 500 members.
The Stillroom
A dim, warm room for yin, sound baths and the 12-week Breathwork Lab.
Lounge & tea bar
The studio is complete: 352 m², and now with a walk-through 3D tour.
The space
Designed around light and silence
Warm lime plaster, European oak, honed travertine and linen. Everything in the studio is chosen to lower your shoulders. See how it is built, and walk through it, before your first class.
